Recursion Window Display

Recursion is a pharmesudical company located in downtown Salt Lake who sponsored a window display to educate the general public about the their company and what they do. The directions for the design included an art installation of micro photography of cells. We would combined the art installation with one of their retired robots on display. I designed the initial concept and the graphic design. Sky Hatter and I fabricated the installation. Matt Merton fabricated the robot side shelf as well as platforms to raise the robot up to a better sight line.

Early concepts I explored included the visual looks of different cell photography as well as researching contrasting materials. I was inspired by some fabric sculptors and figured it would be a great way to capture the cell wall of the cells. I wanted to also light the installation with UV black lights so the installation looked liked the vibrant images it mimicked at night. The hexes were a symbolic visual representation of the data that recursions robots photograph and the way that their algorithm sorts data to find successful experiments. Every time the robot goes through its cycle a photograph is shown on the LCD screen next to it.

Final graphics were presented with a few suggested layouts. Hidden facts were also put randomly in each of the hexagons to add more viewer engagement to the display. I created CAD drawings so the robot shelf could be fabricated. I also created a dieline for the cells so an internal structure could be created for the cells that could be laser cut and assembled.
